How Does a Virtual Primary Care Membership Work?

White ACCESS logo on a premium black background

Short answer

A virtual primary care membership gives you an ongoing way to reach a licensed clinician online for everyday, non-emergency care: new concerns, follow-ups, and long-term management. At ACCESS, you join one membership, start care from your member portal, and keep your records, messages, and results together in My Care, so care continues between visits. ACCESS is a membership, not insurance, and not emergency care. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.

This article is general information, not medical advice. Licensed clinicians make every clinical decision.

What a virtual primary care membership is

Virtual primary care is ongoing everyday care with a licensed clinician for new concerns, follow-ups, and long-term management, delivered online instead of in a waiting room. A membership organizes that care around an ongoing relationship rather than a single appointment.

That is the core idea behind an online primary care membership: you are not buying one visit at a time. You are joining a consistent place to start care, where your history, messages, and plan stay connected from one need to the next.

At ACCESS, virtual primary care is included in every membership, alongside other everyday services. It is care from your phone, organized in one secure member portal.

How it differs from urgent-only telehealth

Many virtual care services are built around the immediate concern. You open an app, explain what is wrong today, complete the visit, and the encounter ends. That can be useful for a defined, one-time need.

A virtual primary care membership is built around what happens next:

  • Follow-ups, not just first visits. Primary care includes follow-ups and long-term management, not only a single encounter.
  • A record that follows you. Visits, messages, prescriptions, and records live in one place instead of scattered across apps.
  • A plan that is reviewed over time. Your plan is reviewed and adjusted over time as things change.
  • Urgent needs in the same place. At ACCESS, 24/7 urgent care for non-emergency concerns sits inside the same membership as primary care, so you do not need a separate service for off-hours questions.

ACCESS describes this as more than telehealth: access-first, connected, and continuous. For a fuller comparison of the two models, see Telehealth Subscription vs Healthcare Membership.

How a virtual primary care membership works at ACCESS

Here is the path from joining to ongoing care, based on how ACCESS describes it on How It Works.

Choose a membership

Review what ACCESS includes, then choose ACCESS Individual or ACCESS Family and a membership term on the membership page. ACCESS care is delivered through membership.

Join and sign in to your portal

Complete secure checkout and land in your ACCESS portal. If you choose ACCESS Family, the primary member can invite household members by email.

Start care when you need it

Members start care from the member portal. You can choose an async provider review, where you submit details and a licensed clinician responds, or a live virtual visit scheduled at a time you choose. You answer intake questions, and clinician assignment happens when care is requested.

A licensed clinician reviews and recommends next steps

A licensed clinician reviews your information and responds. That may include guidance, a care plan, testing where clinically appropriate, or a recommendation for in-person evaluation. Your clinician will tell you when a concern needs in-person care and can help you understand the next step.

Follow through in My Care

After a visit, care does not reset. In My Care you can message your care team securely, review results, manage prescriptions, and view your care plan. Care navigation, prescriptions, labs, and records stay connected, so nothing gets dropped between visits.

What “continuous care” means here

Continuous care is the difference between a series of disconnected transactions and an ongoing relationship with your healthcare. ACCESS frames the goal simply: a clinician who understands your history, a record that follows you, and a plan that adapts as you change.

In practice, continuity at ACCESS lives in three places:

  • Your record. Visits, messages, labs, medications, and care plans are kept together in your member portal.
  • Your plan. Ongoing messaging, follow-up, and check-ins help your plan keep up with your life.
  • Your starting point. When a new question comes up, you begin in the same place instead of starting from zero.

Who makes the clinical decisions

Technology organizes the work. Licensed clinicians make every clinical decision, practicing within their scope and state. ACCESS AI never makes clinical decisions.

That also means no specific outcome, prescription, or approval is ever guaranteed. A clinician decides what is appropriate after review, and some needs require an in-person visit. You can read more about ACCESS principles on the About page.

What else the membership includes

Virtual primary care is one part of the published membership benefits on the ACCESS membership page, which also include:

  • 24/7 urgent care for non-emergency concerns
  • Dermatology
  • Care navigation
  • Behavioral health and counseling resources, plus 24/7 crisis-management resources
  • Specialist messaging and network access where available (varies by state and availability)
  • Medication management with your ACCESS care team (prescriptions and pharmacy costs vary)
  • Labs, available where clinically appropriate and priced separately unless stated
  • The ACCESS portal and My Care

Included core care encounters have no additional encounter fee. Prescriptions are never guaranteed: a licensed clinician decides after review, and some medications require an in-person evaluation.

What a virtual primary care membership is not

  • Not insurance. ACCESS is a membership for everyday healthcare access. It does not replace major medical coverage for hospital stays, ER visits, or other major medical costs. See Is ACCESS Insurance? and Healthcare Membership vs Insurance.
  • Not emergency care. It does not replace 911 or the emergency room.
  • Not in-person care. Some concerns need an in-person evaluation, and your clinician will tell you when.
  • Not a guarantee of any treatment, prescription, or result. Clinicians make decisions after review.
  • Not the same as other ACCESS offerings. Membership is ongoing everyday healthcare access. Marketplace products are not part of membership.

For you or your whole household

ACCESS Individual covers one member. ACCESS Family covers a primary member plus additional family members, up to the household limit shown on the membership page. Every covered household member has the same core benefits and keeps their own private record. See Family Healthcare Membership.

When it is not an everyday need

If something feels like an emergency, or you are unsure and it feels severe, do not wait on a membership. Call 911 or go to the nearest ER. For practical non-emergency options, see How to Get a Doctor When You Need One. You can also read the ACCESS FAQs or learn what we mean by a doctor in your pocket.

FAQ

How does a virtual primary care membership work?

You join a membership, sign in to a secure member portal, and start care online when you need it. At ACCESS, you can choose an async provider review or a scheduled live virtual visit, and a licensed clinician reviews and responds. Messages, results, prescriptions, and records stay together in My Care for follow-up.

How is virtual primary care different from urgent-only telehealth?

Urgent-only telehealth usually centers on a single visit for an immediate concern. Virtual primary care is ongoing: new concerns, follow-ups, and long-term management, with your record and plan kept in one place. ACCESS includes both virtual primary care and 24/7 urgent care for non-emergencies in one membership.

Who makes clinical decisions in an ACCESS membership?

Licensed clinicians practicing within their scope and state review your information and make every clinical decision. Technology organizes the work, and ACCESS AI never makes clinical decisions.

Is a virtual primary care membership the same as insurance?

No. ACCESS is a membership, not insurance, and it does not replace health coverage for hospital stays, ER visits, or other major medical costs. It is also not emergency care. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest ER.

Can I get prescriptions or labs through virtual primary care?

A licensed clinician may prescribe when it is clinically appropriate after review, but prescriptions are never guaranteed, and some medications require an in-person evaluation. Labs are available where clinically appropriate and are priced separately unless stated.

What happens if I need in-person care?

Your clinician will tell you when a concern needs in-person evaluation and can help you understand the next step. ACCESS membership does not include in-person or emergency care. In an emergency, call 911.
